Columbia Gorge WineTrail

Going east from Portland, the Columbia Gorge WineTrail takes you through the territory made famous by Lewis and Clark. However, the Columbia River is far tamer now than what they experienced in the fall of 1805. Today, we have plenty of windsurfers, destination resorts, vineyards, and wineries to experience. Your tour will introduce you to wineries with names like Springhouse Cellar Winery, Naked Winery, Cathedral Ridge Winery, Phelps Creek Vineyards, Bolton Cellars, and Erin Glenn Winery. For the most part the wineries are located in Hood River, with a few residing to the east in The Dalles. ( WineTrail Tip #1: there are four tasting rooms in Hood River’s town center. Simply park the car and plan on stretching your legs.) In between wine tasting, there are inviting spots for sleeping, such as the Columbia Gorge Hotel, the Hood River Hotel, the Oak Street Hotel, and the Inn at the Gorge B&B. For eats, Hood River offers plenty of tummy-filling choices. Check out Brian’s Pourhouse (my favorite), Stonehedge Gardens, The North Oak Brasserie, or Celilo Restaurant & Bar. All offer great fare with local wines. ( WineTrail Tip #2: limited time? Go to the Gorge White House to sample and purchase wine from throughout the Columbia Gorge – both Washington and Oregon. See www.thegorgewhitehouse.com.)
