Situated by Little Bear Creek near downtown Woodinville, the winery and tasting room are a little off the beaten path. To WineTrail lovers, that translates into an oasis without the crowds. Woodinville Wine Cellars possesses none of the business-park feel or the chateau-like experience. Rather, it has an elegant, showroom-like quality that just happens to feature a great place to enjoy a picnic. The warm colors of the tasting room highlight a perfect environment to sample the winery’s Bordeaux-dominant reds and his beautifully balanced sauvignon blanc. He produces an unusual blend called Odd Man Out featuring two Bordeaux grapes varieties you simply don’t see blended – malbec and petite verdot.
Perhaps Sean was destined to make wine from an early age when his father was key to launching Wine Spectator magazine and as a small boy exposed to many great wine growing regions of the world. Later he worked at wineries in Australia, Spain and Portugal before signing on as Woodinville Wine Cellar’s assistant wine maker and lead sales person. It wasn’t long however before Sean became the chief winemaker for Woodinville Wine Cellars with the goal of small lots of ultra-premium wine displaying the terroir of the Columbia Valley. Translation: he’s an artisan winemaker and a superb one at that.
The green space adjoining the winery complete with sprawling lawn, mature trees and Little Bear Creek gurgling in the background is the perfect venue for summertime parties for wine club members and friends of Woodinville Wine Cellars. Imagine pairing WWC syrah with a pulled pork slider and rock music in the background. Now add Sean pouring wine (he comes equipped with a contagious smile) to the scene and you have life at its finest Northwest style.
