Wapato Point Cellars
Jonathon Kludt is a mature young man. At 26, his youth may explain the unbridled energy he’s used to create a destination where visitors can enjoy great cuisine and great wine. Yet his résumé includes extensive experience in the wine industry. He is the son of Steve and Bobbi Kludt of Lake Chelan Winery fame. Jonathon also spent time in Santa Barbara working at Fess Parker Winery and Vineyards. Moreover, he is wise enough to realize the advantage of surrounding himself with talented staff and family, and in particular, relying on the sage winemaking advice of Ray Sandidge.
Fundamental to Wapato Point Cellars’ success is its wine, which includes a full slate of red and whites, many of which having won awards. Several vintages are created from grapes grown in the family’s own Cougar Ridge Vineyard. This estate vineyard is within the soon-to-be-named Lake Chelan Valley viticulture area, and for Jonathon, it is a great source of pride.
Located in the heart of Wapato Point Resort, the winery is family friendly, with a huge yard that includes playground equipment for kids—or adults who act like kids. There’s plenty of space for picnicking and tossing a Frisbee. Even the menu at the Winemaker’s Grill is kid friendly, with menu items geared to appeal to young taste buds. This family-oriented approach reflects Jonathon’s own beliefs about the importance of family; he is very involved in both the Kludt family and his spouse’s family, the Williams.
Many WineTrail trekkers time their visit to Wapato Point Cellars for the evening, so that they can dine at the casually elegant Winemaker’s Grill and enjoy live music from local talent. (WineTrail note: For a great evening meal, try the New York strip steak with the estate merlot.) The winery hosts numerous special events and offers a spacious banquet room and patio for family and corporate events. Family owned and operated, Wapato Point Cellars is a destination winery not to be missed along the Lake Chelan North Shore WineTrail.
