Three Rivers Winery
Midway between Lowden and Walla Walla sits the 16-acre site of Three Rivers Winery — plenty of space to sample wine, shop for merchandise, and play golf. Golf? Yes, Three Rivers is unique among Washington wineries; it comes equipped with a short, three-hole golf course. What’s more, the golfing is free.
This is a destination winery for a variety of reasons. Foremost is the sheer size of the complex, which is composed of a winery, tasting room, gift shop, conference room, and outdoor deck. At 18,000 square feet, there’s plenty of room to host your next corporate event or join a swarm of other wine tasters at the generous tasting room bar. The gift shop is one of the largest in the state, with enough stock to cross everything off next year’s Christmas list. The buyer for Three Rivers Winery must have a discerning eye for great quality merchandise — schlocky trinkets are off-limits here.
The structure itself is an inviting contemporary-style building with massive entrance doors, an interior with high-trussed ceilings, a huge stone-hearth fireplace, and an ample deck featuring one of the top views in Washington, courtesy of the Blue Mountains in the distance. In the past, Three Rivers Winery shunned weddings, trying to avoid the “bridezilla” syndrome. However, all that has changed under the ownership of William Foley, a California businessman who includes a number of other wineries in his portfolio, including Firestone.
The tasting fee varies depending upon what wines you sample, with a higher fee charged for reserve wines. We recommend that you indulge in the reserves and experience why winemaker Holly Turner has garnered so many awards and high praise. Since joining Three Rivers Winery in 2000, Holly has drawn upon her bachelor’s degree in biology from Western Oregon State College and extended coursework in winemaking and wine grape production done at University of California–Davis. In addition, her résumé includes considerable hands-on working experience at Chateau Ste. Michelle and the Bodega la Rural winery in Mendoza, Argentina. All that experience goes into creating a style of wine that achieves balance — not too much wood or alcohol. Easy to drink, yet layered, food friendly, wonderfully quaffable.
Your visit will reveal why local readers of the Walla Walla Union Bulletin Newspaper voted Three Rivers Winery “Best Local Winery” five years in a row. Just remember to pack your 9-iron. Fore!
