Tasawik Vineyards

Unedited

Named after a Palouse Indian tribe, Tasawik Vineyards is the creation of owners Erik Dahle and Sara Broetje. Erik, from Bergen, Norway (beautiful spot I might add on the west coast of oil rich Norway) met Sara at Pacific Lutheran University as students. He came with a background of amateur winemaking and she was of eastern Washington orchard grower roots. They both united to create Tasawik Vineyards.

Located on a southwest slope of the Snake River some 17 miles from the confluence of the Snake and Columbia River, the Tasawik Vineyards’ 7+ acres provides the fruit for wines that have won prestigious accolades including a number of metallic awards for their merlot and red blend wines. For me, however, two wines stood out as must try before you die (or at least before you leave Prosser). Their 2005 Merlot with deep garnet color and a great nose had me tilting my glass for the last drop. Its smooth tannins were like pearls. However, don’t leave the tasting room without sampling an example of their red blends. I had the tasting pleasure of their 2006 Hailstorm Red, a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Full bodied, voluptuous, reeking of dark fruits and hints of licorice, this wine made me offer my wine glass for more. Ready to drink today or lay down for 20 years, this wine is a handsome addition to anyone’s cellar.

Sara’s family background with Broetje Orchards provides a rich source of heritage with the land. She understands the whims of Mother Nature and the importance of the people that work the lands. Erik’s love of wine and treating each vintage with equal love and appreciation for their unique qualities underpins the winemaking.

Land meets winemaker and it all comes together at the Winemakers Loft in Prosser where you can experience their award winning wines.
