Stevens Winery

WineTrail trekkers know two things are common among most wineries: First, the vast majority of winemakers/owners are friendly people with a healthy dose of passion. Second, winemakers have divergent backgrounds and often arrive at winemaking from different paths. Such is the case with Stevens Winery, where owners Tim and Paige Stevens welcome each visitor to their Woodinville tasting room with a friendly “glad to see you” smile. Prior to launching Stevens Winery, Tim had been a commercial artist, dabbled in the restaurant business, concentrated on an English degree, and got his fingers dirty at Sheridan Vineyards in Zillah. It was at Sheridan Vineyards, under the tutelage of Scott Greer, that Tim caught the wine bug. From there, he went on to become an assistant winemaker under Matt Loso at Matthews Cellars as well as the recipient of some friendly mentoring from Chris Camarda of the famed Andrew Will Winery on Vashon Island.

Like most of the wineries along the Woodinville WineTrails North, Stevens Winery is not about winery side ventures, such as gift shops or picnic grounds. Rather, it is focused on the wine—especially big reds. Using grapes from the Yakima Valley, Tim crafts premium syrahs, cabernet sauvignons, merlots, and cabernet francs. In addition, Stevens Winery has gained a reputation for its “STEVENS424” red blend (named for the fact that Stevens Winery is the 424th bonded winery in Washington). But with plenty of Northwest seafood demanding a special white wine, Stevens Winery also produces a limited quantity of delicious sauvignon blanc, meaning if you like it, buy it, because it sells out fairly quickly.

Incidentally, remember the previous reference to Tim Stevens’ graphic arts background? Well, for each wine produced, Tim creates original artwork for each label. It’s just one more role for Tim the winemaker/artist/grower/English major/father/husband/waiter. Cheers!

Unbelievably outstanding wines!! I have never had a Viognier that made me do such a double-take. And the Reserve Cab is stunning--we bought & so did several of our friends. Even at that price it is worth it. Go & enjoy.
