Sorensen Cellars
Along the Whidbey Island–Port Townsend WineTrail, just outside of beautiful Port Townsend, is Sorensen Cellars, another wine oasis for WineTrail trekkers. Established in 1998, Sorensen Cellars is a small, family-owned and -operated winery dedicated to the production of premium wines. The knowledgeable pouring staff makes you feel more at ease with each tasty sample. With the philosophy that all winemaking begins in the vineyard, winemaker and owner Richard Sorensen seeks out premium grape growers, such as Candy Mountain Vineyards near the Tri-Cities for its sangiovese, the Ciel Du Cheval Vineyard for its merlot, and Windy Ridge Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills appellation.
Sorensen Cellars produces two labels: its premium label, Sorensen, and its more light-hearted, value-oriented Townsend Bay label. Be sure to try the pinot gris, merlot, sangiovese, and cabernet sauvignon under the Sorensen label. Richard uses only French oak for these premium wines. The skins touch his cabernet franc rosé for only 24 hours, and the result is a dry (only 1 percent residual sugar), peach-colored treat. Think of this paired with summer salad and lemon-pepper chicken. Are you salivating yet?
Check out the Sorensen website for events and newsletter tidbits at www.sorensencellars.com. Like its distinct wines, the winery’s website is different from the norm, using a picnic basket theme with links to navigate through the website—a nice approach.
