Masset Winery
Dripping with French-country charm, the Masset Winery tasting room is located in a barn converted from the historic 1905 Angel Farmstead. We can only imagine what Greg and Michaela Masset felt like when they decided to transform the dilapidated barn into an inviting tasting room. However, with considerable elbow grease and buckets of paint, Michaela succeeded—if the winery goes south, she’s got a career as an interior designer. Choosing the right mix of antiques to complement the warm yellows and earthy browns, she created a perfect space to taste wine and relax in understated elegance. A hand-hewn 14-foot-long workbench separates the tasting bar area from an inviting living room. This centerpiece invites you to touch.
Michaela is also in charge of the tasting room and charmingly pours wines that have wonderful names, such as “Sandra Jean,” “Love Potion #9,” and “Margaret Alice.” Despite being a recent startup, Masset Winery offers a full complement of reds (e.g., syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot), whites (e.g., a semillon/sauvignon blanc blend, a roussane/viognier blend), and port. But the real star of the show is Masset’s petit sirah, which winemaker Greg Masset is so passionate about that he is an active member of “P.S. I Love You,” a petit sirah advocacy organization. Because very few of the 30,000 acres of grapes planted in Washington are petit sirah, to find a winery that specializes in this grape is indeed a treat.
Winemaker Greg Masset is an executive chef by day at the Yakima Country Club. Greg grew up in the hospitality business as a family member of the renowned Birchfield Manor Gourmet Restaurant. Armed with a degree in food science and his background in the business, Greg has the pedigree for Masset Winery to succeed.
Greg Masset is hard-working and quick to give thanks to family, friends and mentors. His quest is for elegant simplicity, creating big Yakima wines with that petit sirah difference. With all these good things going for Masset Winery, it’s clear that the 1905 Angel Farmstead has been lovingly reborn.
