Lenné Estate

Principal owner Steve Lutz knew that the steep southerly slope and unfavorable soil (predominantly Peavine and Willakenzie soils) was a good sign. He understood that good wine comes from stressed grapes — grapes that don’t get irrigated. The vines grow deep roots in search of water. As a result, the clusters that survive are packed with flavor. Steve and his wife, Karen, visited the prospective site in this part of Yamhill County in 2000 and knew its steep slope and summertime heat would conspire to create great pinot noir. After all, nearby vintners, including WillaKenzie Estate, Deux Vert, Soléna, Soter, and Beau Frères, had established great reputations. The Lutzes and their partners took the plunge, bought the land, and planted pinot noir.

The name “Lenné” pays homage to Karen’s dad, Len, who was a British chicken farmer. Len and the farm are now gone, but the love for him lives on in the name. It also lives in the vineyard where Steve and his partners have had to coax and nurture the vines, and become true dirt guys to make up for a high vine death rate. However, after many seasons, success is measured in bottle units with the production of their estate pinot noir.

Success is also measured by the creation of a charming tasting room. The stone façade of the new tasting room has a French country flavor, and somehow the giant rooster sculpture out front complements the property. The rolling-hill views of nearby vineyards are stunning. Within, the tasting room is an inviting space with its cool Mediterranean colors and light, airy feel. In addition to Lenné wines, WineTrail trekkers will be surprised to find other “guest” wines at the tasting room. For example, I swirled and sipped Owen Roe wine during my visit.

Are you interested in crossing over from being a mere spectator to a co-owner? For $15,000, you, too, can become a partner in a winery! Hey, that’s got my attention. Check out www.lenneestate.com to learn more about this opportunity.
