Latah Creek Wine Cellars
Latah Creek Wine Cellars has everything going for it: history, excellent white wines, great location, and a gift shop to die for. Since 1982, when Mike and Ellena Conway started Latah Creek, they have been part of a rather exclusive list of Washington wine industry founders.
To appreciate Latah Creek is to understand the philosophy that guides Mike Conway. Essentially, he believes in giving his customers the best value for their wine dollar. Consequently, the Conways sell many of their wines at a low price point (around $10 a bottle) and rely on grapes from the same region of the state that so-called higher-end wineries use. Don’t be surprised if you see loyal customers carting away cases from their tasting room visit.
WineTrails Note: Unusual for Spokane area wineries, Latah Creek features a muscat canelli wine using grapes from Wahluke Slope. For an interesting tastebud experience, sample the muscat canelli juxtaposed with the winery’s reserve chardonnay. The flavors pop! Also fun is Latah Creek’s huckleberry riesling, a sure-bet back-porch wine.
You won’t need a GPS device to find Latah Creek. Located just off the I-90 freeway a few miles east of downtown Spokane, the winery boasts ample parking and a generously sized tasting room. A gift shop within the tasting room spills into the wine production area. Ellena Conway has an eye for wine merchandise, and there is a good chance that all your holiday gift buying for the wine lovers on your list can be achieved with a visit to Latah Creek.
