Kana Winery

Located in the historic Larson Building on South Second Street, Kana’s tasting room offers complimentary wine tasting and rotating art on the wall. As an added bonus, Kana Winery hosts “happy hour” between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. But wait, there’s more! Downtown Yakima is a “corkage free zone” and Kana Winery is one of the wineries/tasting rooms that participate in the program. Essentially the typical $10 corkage fee that restaurants charge is waived when you bring in a bottle of freshly purchased wine (along with your receipt).

Winemaker Ben Grossman with consultant Dr. Wade Wolfe of Thurston-Wolfe Winery fame focus on Rhone-style blends, using varietals such as roussanne, viognier, marsanne, syrah, mourvedre, grenache, and counoise. Kana Winery does manage to produce some non-Rhone varietal wines, including an off-dry riesling but the real crowd-pleasers are the reds. My own palate danced with the healthy sip of their Dark Star red wine with bright blueberry notes and a lasting finish.

As noted on the Kana website, “Kana” is a Native American word for the spirit, or the fire, within a mountain, referring to the perceived supernatural power of volcanic activity. With the Cascade Mountains in the distance, it’s not hard to imagine why the locals would have respect for Kana. Visitors are welcome at Kana Winery throughout the year; it’s known to draw particularly large crowds for special events, such as Thanksgiving in the Wine Country, Red Wine and Chocolate, and Spring Barrel Tasting. No matter what their cultural backgrounds may be, visitors will likely agree that Kana Winery is good for the spirit.
