Hedges Family Estate
Talk about winning the vineyard lottery: In 1990, Tom Hedges and his French-born wife, Anne-Marie, purchased a parcel of land in an obscure area called Red Mountain. Now they are sitting on a viticultural “goldmine,” and the price tag for land in this newly designated American Viticultural Area has gone up considerably. However, such are the spoils for those with vision, passion, and a willingness to take a big risk.
Now considered a destination winery, the Hedges chateau presents a visual landmark on Red Mountain and offers a commanding view of miles of vineyards, with wineries dotting the land and Horse Heaven Hills in the distance. From the elegant outdoor furniture outside, Hedges Family Estate is the perfect place to enjoy one of its award-winning blends and soak in one of the top views in Washington.
As you drive up to the winery, a sign directs you to the upscale chateau, where you can sample the winery’s top-tier wines for a small fee (refundable with purchase). The tasting room features Hedges’ popular blended whites and reds, known for their great value. The CMS white is a blend of chardonnay, marsanne, and sauvignon blanc, and is a perfect match for Northwest seafood. The CMS red blend combines cabernet, merlot, and syrah. The principal ingredient—cabernet sauvignon from Red Mountain grapes—informs your palate that you are about to experience a wonderfully intense yet balanced wine.
This tasting room features a baby grand piano, museum-quality art, and an exquisite tasting bar. The setting pairs wonderfully with Hedges’ “Three Vineyards” red blends, which consistently receive high praise. A few samples will reveal that many of these vintages are most fully appreciated only after being cellared for several years. Other vintages are ready to take on a peppered steak later that evening.
