Glen Fiona Winery
Syrah: A noble black grape variety thought to be indigenous to the Rhône region of France since Roman times.
Have you ever noticed how syrah tastes different from one Washington winery to another? Moreover, even in the same winery, the syrah can differ remarkably from one year to another. However, despite this difference, there is one thing WineTrail seekers can count on: The syrah at Glen Fiona is consistently good year after year.
Since 1995, Glen Fiona has staked its reputation on making top-notch syrah, first under the guidance of Caleb Foster (now Buty Winery’s owner and winemaker) and Michael Carpenter, and later with winemaker Rusty Figgins (now at Cave B Winery). The ownership has changed as well. In 2004, Washington Wine & Beverage Co., owners of Silver Lake Winery, acquired Glen Fiona. Despite changing winemakers and owners, the vision of Glen Fiona has remained constant—to create premium syrah using “natural” techniques to maintain the expression of the fruit. We’re talking “low intervention methodology.”
Glen Fiona Winery and its tasting room are located in south Walla Walla, near the Rulo and Eisenhower wineries. The Celtic-themed wine estate (Glen Fiona means “valley of the vine” in Gaelic) enjoys a stunning panoramic view of the Blue Mountains. Yes, soak in the view, but get ready to enjoy syrah with names such as “Basket Press Reserve,” “Puncheon-Aged,” and “Cuvee Parallel 46.” Now you’ve found your pot of gold.
