Edmonds Winery

Located in the same business park where a number of other Woodinville WineTrail North wineries are found, Edmonds Winery is a relatively new “micro” winery founded by owner/winemaker Jim Peterson. Working closely with his wife, Lael, their goal “is to make our wines in a lighter fashion, for the most part just letting the wine make itself, with minimal intervention. We handcraft our wines in small, open-top fermentation tanks and age in small oak barrels.”

You’re in for a treat if you venture to Edmonds Winery, because Jim is usually doing the pouring honors. You’ll get to sample some truly excellent wine while engaging in a conversation with Jim. And talk with Jim can go in many directions, thanks to his diverse work background. His current day job is as a computer specialist with Group Health Cooperative, but he has also dabbled in a variety of other careers. (WineTrail Note: Tasting-room enthusiasts run into a lot of winemakers who keep their day jobs while following their passion for making great wine. Jim embodies this renaissance characteristic to the nth degree.)

You will swirl, smell, and have a hard time spitting out Jim’s Bordeaux-style blends. Of note is a cabernet sauvignon he has dubbed “Mystery,” because it has a smell and taste that you won’t find in any other wine. However, call it serendipity or just dumb luck, but one WineTrail enthusiast who was there when we were visiting exclaimed that the smell was reminiscent of geraniums. To which the eight tasters in attendance agreed that she had nailed it. Mystery solved, perhaps?

Edmonds Winery is an active member of the Woodinville Wine Country Association and, in collaboration with other Woodinville wineries, participates in the Passport to Woodinville (the first weekend of April) and the St. Nicholas Open House (first weekend of December) events. Visit www.woodinvillewinecountry.com for details. The winery also enjoys hosting new-wine-release parties, an annual crush party, a winery anniversary party, spring barrel tasting, and a number of other excuses to party. You get the picture. Fellow WineTrail enthusiasts, a stop at Edmonds Winery, along the Woodinville North WineTrail, is a must.
