Eagle Haven Winery

A celebration of Northwest fruit, Eagle Haven Winery is the collaboration of owners Tom and Jim Perkins (father and son), Fred Vochatzer, and winemaker Chuck Jackson. Their creation is a tribute to the surrounding apple orchards, grape fields, nearby rivers, and animal habitats. These guys are hard-working, salt-of-the-earth types who haven’t forgotten how to have a good time after a good day’s work. The motif of the winery is intentionally “Old West,” and its large tasting room boasts an expansive tasting bar that surely took much of the Northern Hemisphere’s forests of knotty pine to construct. The result is a welcoming environment most suitable for tasting wine and striking up a conversation with other WineTrail enthusiasts.

The winery is located 4 miles east of Sedro Woolley in the foothills of the North Cascade Mountains. Here in this Eddie Bauer setting is the Eagle Haven Winery, surrounded by 40 acres of orchards containing 50 apple varieties. Next to the winery is a charming garden area with outdoor furniture, the perfect place to uncork a bottle of Eagle Haven’s Madeleine Angevine and siegerrebe blend to enjoy with Gouda cheese and nutty crackers.

Since 2004, winemaker Chuck Jackson has been producing unique fruit wines (winter pear, red apple, blackberry, and black currant), a crisp white wine using a blend of Madeleine Angevine and siegerrebe grapes, and a syrah using grapes from the Columbia Valley. Chuck has 30 years of experience fashioning premium wines.

By the way, Fred Vochatzer and Jim Perkins typically do the honor of pouring wine for visitors, and their running commentary will convince you—as it did me—that the black currant wine has a distinctive evergreen forest smell. Passion has a way of doing that.
