Des Voigne Cellars

Get ready for another one of those Woodinville WineTrail North business park wineries—but with a twist. Or perhaps we should say “twists,” because here you get a two-for-one tasting room. Darren Des Voigne, founder of Des Voigne Winery, and his brother Derek Des Voigne, owner of Cuillin Hills Winery, have opted to share winemaking facilities and tasting room. Fortunately, they are not twin brothers; otherwise WineTrail enthusiasts might be really confused.

Des Voigne Cellars is one of Woodinville’s newest boutique wineries, founded by Darren and Melissa Des Voigne. The Des Voignes’ goal is to produce small quantities of “Tuscany-inspired” premium wines from select Washington vineyards. Just out of the gates, Darren’s first-year crop of wines netted 400 cases of sangiovese, syrah, cabernet franc, merlot as well as a newly released red blend they have dubbed “Solea.” “Solea” is an Andalusian word for the flamenco. (Darren named the blend after a song by Miles Davis, not because he is studying to be a flamenco dancer.) The “Solea” is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, and malbec, all from Washington's prized Red Mountain area. This would be great wine with a summertime barbeque or a wet winter Seattle night with red beans and rice and smoked sausage and a splash of jazz in the background. All Des Voigne vintages are noteworthy, but for those who lean toward the spicy syrah, we encourage you to check out the Des Voigne version. It would make a perfect complement to a peppercorn steak and grilled corn on the cob.

Because Des Voigne Cellars is similar to the other business-park wineries, don’t bother to pack a picnic or plan to shop in the gift shop. Just bring your palate for great wine tasting in a relaxed but somewhat Spartan environment. Des Voigne Cellars is truly a destination spot along the WineTrail journey.
