Covington Cellars

Covington Cellars is a family affair and a true labor of love. Founded in 2002 by David and Cindy Lawson, Covington Cellars is the story of a beer guy who meets a wine woman and falls in love with both her and the wine. Ever the tinkerer, David began experimenting with winemaking at the Lawsons’ house in Covington. One success led to another, and with a few University of California–Davis courses under David’s belt, Covington Cellars was born.

Cindy is usually working the Tuscan-inspired tasting room while David and David Jr. are handling the ongoing winemaking chores in the back. The warm colors of the tasting room are a pleasant contrast to the asphalt parking lot at the 142nd Avenue business park where the tasting room is located. And while David’s day job as an elevator mechanic is up and down, his winemaking duties often have him going back and forth as he travels to Walla Walla and Yakima Valley to collaborate with Covington’s growers. Among them are Seven Hills, Les Collines, Kestrel, Destiny Ridge, and Klipsun.

David explains that Covington Cellars is a “hobby gone mad” and is quick to point out that it is Cindy who is the business brains behind the operation. David is also involved with the Naval Reserve, and he views his winemaking efforts as an opportunity to give back. To this end, David produces a Rough House Red as a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. This wine is dedicated to the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces and their families. WineTrail Note: If you are active-duty military or a veteran, you will receive a 10 percent discount on Rough House Red wines. Nice touch.

David’s loyalties to family and to country have in turn spawned a loyal following of Covington Cellars buyers. At Passport to Woodinville, the line to sample his reds snaked out the tasting room to the outside parking lot. The Lawsons must be doing something right. Check it out. That’s an order!
