Chinook Wines

In Prosser, at the intersection of Wittkopf Loop and Wine Country Road, the paths of winemaker and viticulturist also cross. Since 1983, Kay Simon and Clay Mackey have joined forces to create great wines under the Chinook Winery label. Their wines showcase the Yakima Valley varietals, including chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, semillon, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. Assisted by Copper—the ever-present golden retriever—Kay and Clay warmly host winery guests in their renovated farmhouse. This is a favorite stop along the Prosser WineTrail, and it’s no wonder, given the charming tasting room, a gorgeous garden for picnicking, and the surrounding vineyard, plum and cherry orchards. Pack a picnic for this WineTrail stop!

As you swirl and sip, you’re struck by Kay and Clay’s simple but noble vision to produce small quantities of delicious, aged wines. They have no aspirations for world domination or cranking out large quantities of wine. You might also be struck by the distinctive Chinook wine label and may recall that you have seen it before. No doubt you have. Clay routinely hops in the truck and makes deliveries to Seattle-area restaurants and wine shops.

Chinook wines are intended to complement Northwest cuisine. To encourage this pairing, Kay and Clay offer a no-fuss recipe for grilled, fennel-crusted salmon on their website. This salmon is an excellent choice for pairing with Chinook’s sauvignon blanc.

Chinook Winery is a joy to visit … repeatedly.
