Caterina Winery

Unedited

Question: what do T3, C4 and LC5 have in common? I will answer most of that in a moment but to experience C4 and LC5, head to Caterina Winery for samples. Located in the historic Broadview Dairy Building adjacent to Riverfront Park, the charming Caterina Winery provides a nice venue for tasting wine and listening to occasional live music on First Fridays.

Named after one of the founder’s beloved Italian grandmother, Caterina Winery has been producing a wide range of affordable varietals since 1993 under the original winemaking direction of Mike Scott. Now under the ownership of Don Townshend (as in Townshend Cellar) visitors can taste a wide portfolio of wines including its non-vintage C4 red blend. Also noteworthy are their critically acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon (Willard Vineyard sourced fruit) and a surprisingly crisp and floral noted viognier. A sip of the cabernet reminded me of the Italian quote, “One barrel of wine can work more miracles than a church full of saints."

But wait, there’s more! Visitors also taste Townshend’s other label, Lone Canary wines. Recently acquired from the aforementioned Mike Scott, the remaining inventory is at Caterina Winery. For sure, sample the Lone Canary Barbera and Bird House Red both priced under 20 bones and packed with wonderful fruit flavors. However, if available, be sure and taste the LC5, which is another of Don’s non-vintage red blends.

Alas, visitors to Caterina Winery will not have the experience of tasting Don's wine including his ever-popular T3 red blend. For that, they need to drive to the nearby burg of Colbert and visit Townshend Cellar. Don Townshend is often on hand at the winery and he’d be happy to answer that perplexing question of what T3, C4 and LC5 have in common.
